Philmont Scout Ranch is one of four Boy Scout high-adventure bases in the United States. Located near the town of Cimarron, New Mexico, Philmont covers over 200 square miles of forests, mountains, streams, and meadows. Scouts from all over the world flock to Philmont for backpacking expeditions, leadership and skills training, and (like me) the opportunity to be on staff. Founded in 1938, Philmont has grown to become the largest youth camp in the world.
This year, more than 25,000 participants will be part of one of the various Philmont programs. To be exact, in 2011 Philmont expects:
- 22,733 campers
- 3,500 training participants
- 1,070 staff
